Saving the world, one necklace at a time

Eddie, Gabi and Jineane did a fund raiser last Summer to raise money for the Red Cross. They thought of this totally by themselves. Gabi had some kind of jewelry making kit, and they set up a stand on the side of the road and sold jewelry to the cars that passed by.

I don't remember exactly how much they made, but it was something like forty bucks. They took the money to the Red Cross later that day. We were all so proud of them!

Updating my whole web page

I've decided to make this blog page my front page for scott-harris.org. I've now replaced the old web page, which I think I was the only person accessing, with a redirect to scott's ravings. All of the links at that page are now available in the sidebar to the right. I've also added a set of links to blogs that I really enjoy reading.

Also, I pulled another domain name for myself. I now also have scottsravings.org, which (obviously) points to this web page also.

Eventually, I would like to figure out how to get the ftp working between Blogger and Netfirms (my hosting company). It worked the first time I ever tried it, and then never again. It also works when I ftp to my home server, but it hangs with Netfirms. And I don't know why. If I could get it working, I could remove the redirect on scott-harris.org and just host my blog myself (rather than using blogspot.com). But for now, the redirection pointers will work fine.

My old webpage is still available at scott-harris.org/oldindex.shtml.

Arrived back from Cancun

Had a great time in Cancun. They are still rebuilding from the Hurricane Wilma. The city is still about half closed down. Most of the big hotels (Hyatt, Omni, JW Marriott) are still closed. Anybody with a shovel, or a hammer, or a wheelbarrow, or a strong back, for that matter, can work down there. They're busy to get the city back up and running because the tourist dollars are greatly reduced for the moment.

We had a great trip, as always. The Mexican people are the best in the world... so friendly and accommodating—perfect hospitality. ¡Viva MĂ©xico! ¡Viva CancĂșn!

Here are a few of my favorite photos, in no particular order:

A note from Kim Drieth

My cousin Kim had this photo of Grandpa, which she sent out. I wanted to share it:

This is a picture my mom took of Grandpa this past November. He looked really good in this picture. I thought everyone might enjoy seeing this.

It was really good to see everyone again.

Pictures from Grandpa's Funeral

Here are some photos from Grandpa's funeral. Coming soon, I will get Grandpa's 80th Birthday Book scanned in and Olech's speech put on here. Come back soon and look for those.

But for now, enjoy some of these wonderful pictures. It was great to see everybody again. Glad to see all those babies! Grandpa would be so proud!

Pictures from the funeral home. I really liked the poster.

Dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Olech is trying to corrupt his neice Corry!
In the first picture in this set, the people are, from front left back to rear, and back up to the right: Warren Harris, Sandi Guier Harris, Terry Guier, Heather (Olech's gal), Olech Guier, Mike Harris, Carroll Harris, Cooper Harris (baby, not shown), Matt Payne, Deachi Guier Payne, Callyn Payne (baby, not shown), Jimmy Dautrich, Corry Dautrich (baby), Merrick Guier Dautrich, Bob Guier, and Viola Guier.

The VFW did a splendid job at the funeral. The funeral was done with full veteran honors, a 21 gun salute, and when Taps played off in the distance, I lost it big time. It sounded so far off, so lonely. It just seems to grind into you that this event has really happened, and he's really gone. But it sounds so pretty at the same time. Grandpa deserved a burial with full honors, and he got it.

It was nice of some of the Harris clan to show up. Aunt Pam and Aunt Nina showed, and we visited the graves of Grandpa and Grandma Harris as well.

Since I don't get to Ponca City much, I took some touristy pictures. These are of the Pioneer Woman, the refinery at Conoco, and the oil tanks. Believe it or not, these photos evoke a strong nostalgia in me. Ponca's always been the closest place I can call a hometown.

Finally, we wrapped it up with a nice luncheon at Terry's sister, Marta. Everyone got to visit, and we really enjoyed each other. It's a shame it takes a funeral to get us all together each time.
Pictured in the first picture are the grandkids of Kenneth Guier, counter-clockwise from front left: Merrick Guier Dautrich, Deachi Guier Payne, Charlene Guier, Kim Guier Drieth, Scott Harris, Mike Harris, and Olech Guier.
Pictured in the last picture are just some of the great-grandkids of Kenneth Guier, counter-clockwise from the baby in black: Callyn Payne, Dalton Drieth, Danika Guier, Corry Dauthrich, and Cooper Harris.

This one is my personal favorite. It just seems to sum up how special these two people were to each other. Grandpa Kenneth and Grandma Viola Guier both look so happy together here. These two really had something very special between them. God bless them both:

All my videos now live on Google

I've put all my home movies onto Google Video. This will allow better distribution for family members, especially those with slow internet connections. It also provides me with one more form of archival backup. To view the entire set of my work so far, just click the link below. Save this link, or bookmark it, save it as a shortcut, write it down, and visit it often! Drumroll, please. And now, THE LINK:

Search for "Scott E. Harris" on Google Video

The following video, called "Four Songs" is one of the boys goofing around, singing four pretty random songs that came into their head. I love it for its "unfinished" quality. The boys are in their pajamas, and were in a performing mood (which is rare), so we had this impromptu concert. Luke was really big into Star Wars, and Eddie was doing folk music at school.

It shows how beautifully Eddie can sing, and even when he forgets the words, his voice is gorgeous. (Notice how pure and clean his singing is on the Chicken Dance bridge.) And also notice how much of an imp Luke can be during this beautiful solo.

Precious stuff from these two very wild boys! The perfect Eddie and Luke moment!

Getting famous!

This little video is getting me famous! As of this evening, I've gotten 203 views on this video on Google Video. I'm starting to get email traffic with people asking me how to get one of these train teapots themselves. Jeez, I wish I knew. I could make a fortune!

Goodnight, Grandpa

This weekend, Kenneth Guier, my grandfather, passed away. Ken lived a very long, very happy life. He went peacefully in his sleep after a difficult battle with Alzheimers and failing health.

For Christmas this year, just like every year, Grandpa and Grandma Viola bought us a Jackson and Perkins gift card. We bought a large amarylis with the gift card, and Christmas came and went, and the flowers hadn't bloomed.

On Saturday morning, I got up early and sneaked up to the computer before anyone else was up. (Even Eddie). I read Uncle Bobby's email about Grandpa's passing. It hit me hard. That was when Eddie sneaked up to see me, and I explained it to him. I could barely do it. Then, I gathered myself together to go downstairs to make breakfast for everyone, and that amarylis was blooming.

Kenneth was a sailor, a proud veteran, a boy scout leader, a gardener, a carpenter, a hunter, a fisherman, a lover of Elvis Presley (only after the war!), a great-grandfather to thirteen, a grandfather to eight, a father to three, and a husband to Viola and Evelyn Guier.

There are so many memories of Grandpa. I only have to say a few key words and some of you will know what I mean:

  • Little bottles of Coke
  • M&Ms
  • Eskimo Pies
  • Jumps
  • El Caminos
  • GDSOB
  • Snapping Turtles
  • Duke
  • Dobie
  • Roses
  • Horse Eating Corn
  • Cowboy Boots
These are all shared memories we have of Grandpa and the lives we shared together. He was the cornerstone of all of our lives.

Michael had one really great memory, which I'd like to share. Remember Grandpa's retirement party, when we bought him that big ol' recliner? He loved that recliner--sat in it all the time. Well, Grandpa was a lot of things, but he wasn't always the most patient person when it came to dealing with rambuncious boys, and Mike and I were as rambuncious as they come! Mike, who was probably about ten, came up behind Grandpa's recliner one day, being wild, and pulled on the back of the chair--not knowing that Grandpa was sitting in it. The chair tipped clean over backwards with Grandpa still in it--his boots stickin' up in the air, the pant legs of his overalls fallen up to his knees. He looked like an Apollo astronaut, ready for take-off.

I think Mike must have been a pretty fast runner, because he's still here with us today.

Grandpa always lived life to its fullest, loving his family deeply, showing it through his enormous generosity of time and self. He was an exceptional man.

Right now, in heaven, he's probably got his cowboy boots back on and is sitting with a fishing line dropped in that catfish-hole up in the sky, chewing some unsuspecting person's ear off. Yes, heaven's quite a bit more colorful, now that Grandpa is up there!

Grandpa, we love you, and we miss you.

See you on the other side.
