Labor Day Weekend

We had a lovely last-minute invite from our friends, the Devinneys, for a cookout at their home. Ed and Chrissy live north of town on a beautiful wooded lot in their restored turn-of-the-century log cabin. We know the Devinneys through scouts and from the boys' school. Eddie was in the same class last year as Liam, their youngest, and Chrissy helps out in the library at school. (At least she did last year. This year, she's moving to another two libraries in the county.)

Their party was lovely. The sun was shining, and the kids had the run of the farm. It was funny watching the kids play. The boys all got together like little heathens, and it was not long before they formed themselves into a pack unit and were running around like a raving mob from Lord of the Flies. At one point, I looked out the window to check on them, and each child was wielding an enormous stick, Liam was trumpeting his bugle, while Andrew was beating two-fisted on an oil drum, as if to marshal the group to battle.

Meanwhile, all the girls were reading books on the porch.

Ed and Chrissy are wonderful people, very easy to talk to. The food was great--burgers, pork tenderloin, fresh grilled corn-on-the-cob, and various cakes and salads. It was a nice way to spend the one of the last days of summer vacation.
