New Whisky Acquisitions

Our Burns Supper is tomorrow, and we're stocking up. This morning, Becky sent me to Whole Foods to pick up raspberries for the Crannachan, rutabagas for the neeps, and leeks for the Cock-a-Leekie soup. I also decided to run over to the ABC and pick out two new bottles of whisky to share with our company. After browsing the ABC's surprisingly adequate selection, I chose a bottle of ten year Laphroaig (pronounced "La-froyg"), and a twelve year port wood finished Glenmorangie.

The Laphroaig is a must own for anyone who loves a good Islay malt. As I am newly converted to Islay whisky, I had to pick this one up. I wish they had an older version, but ten year was all the ABC had. Nevertheless, the whisky is wonderful. Full of phenol, tasting of seaweed, grain, tar, salt and honey, it's a powerful whisky for those with adventurous taste buds. Let the timid beware! This whisky grabs you by the collar and dares you to drink it! Splendid!

In contrast, the Glenmorangie port wood finished malt is absolutely gorgeous. On the first sip, I melted into my chair. The whisky is smooth (ohhh, so smooth!) and sweet, balanced and just very damn delicious! I'm sure the lady folk will approve of this whisky over the Laphroaig, and it is a very nice whisky indeed. I fear, however, that it may be too drinkable, and my bottle may be gone before I get to drink much of it myself.
