Best. Halloween. EVER!

Luke and I decided that trick-or-treating was lame... it was much better to hide in the bushes and scare all the little children.  Andrew came over, and the three of us set up positions on the porch among the strobe light and the fog machine... and then we waited.......

This worked beautifully MOST of the time.  We'd scare the be-jesus out of some of the bigger kids, and one foursome of highschoolers avoided us altogether.  However, it failed when the stinger missile of friendly-cheerfulness (i.e. Becky) would come shooting out the front door, and ruin it all by being all "Oh, aren't you cute? You dear little darling!  Oh, SOOO CUTE!"

Andrew complained to Luke, "Dude, your mom is ruining it."

He was right.  Next year, we're sending her on a girls' weekend so we can have the porch to ourselves.

Eddie and Gabi went trick or treating together (old school), Eddie dressed as Catwoman and Gabi as a mad tea party activist (or something like that).

Another great year of paganry... best holiday ever!

Pre-Halloween Fun

We spent the day yesterday carving pumpkins and getting ready for Halloween.  After dinner, we headed over to Sharon and Desi's for cake and a little camp fire in the back yard.  It was a great cool autumn evening, just perfect for a roasting fire!

Fed Up with Wachovia

Wachovia used to be a nice bank. Becky and I established our Wachovia account way back in 1997 when we moved to Virginia. Back then, it was First Union, and one of the only banks on Main Street. We wanted something local and convenient with an ATM in our town to avoid extra charges.

Things were great for thirteen years. The bank was so good, we joked Wachovia was pronounced, "WATCH-OVER-YA".  Their Crown Banking had no fees as long as we kept a minimal amount in our account. Mind you, the checking and savings accounts paid a ridiculous amount of interest (.1% or something like that), but that was the norm for checking accounts nationwide.  Otherwise, the access was good and the price was free.

Cue the ominous music.  Enter Wells Fargo.

On Dec. 31, 2008, Wells Fargo purchased the Charlotte based Wachovia, and things were fine... for a while.

In my last statement, they have started to nickel and dime me with charges. I only wish it was just nickels and dimes, though:
  • $5.95 per month for online banking, a service I absolutely need,
  • $2.50 for each non Wells Fargo ATM (in addition to the normal charge from other banks), and
  • $2.00 per month if I want a paper statement with check images on it.

Is that all?  I don't know.  But I'm not finding out.  I'm out of here.

After thirteen years, I'm walking away from Wachovia. (Or is it Walk-Over-You?) Changing banks is not something I do lightly. After all, it's a pain in the butt to change.  I have to reset my direct deposit, get new checks, get new ATM cards, get new custodial accounts for the boys, transfer all the money over.  But I will not pay these ridiculous service charges just to have access to my money. Honestly, at $10 per month, isn't it cheaper to keep my money under a mattress? That's not supposed to be how banks work.

Where did I decide to bank? Well, I won't be broadcasting that on the Internet, thank you very much, but suffice it to say that the new bank offers:
  • Free checking and savings with actual interest
  • Free accounts for the boys (which include ATM cards and checks as we teach them financial responsibility)
  • Free ATM access (even if we use a non-affiliated ATM, they will refund the OTHER BANK charges!)
  • Free checks
  • Free deposit slips
  • Free online banking
  • Deposits by scanner at home (that seems pretty cool)
All this from a company that has been in business for just under 100 years.

Now I'm wondering, why didn't I do this sooner?

-----

UPDATE:  In the category of "This Further Pisses Me Off", Wachovia also started embedding advertisements into my online banking.  This is really so annoying.  I'm not just talking about the standard side-bar ads that most of the banks use, but the embedded yellow call-out ads slid in between each line of my account status.  (With no way to acknowledge or close the ads.)

As if I needed another reason to leave!

I Don't Think I'd Ever Poop on a Job Site!

Once again, I have a new ringtone, courtesy of Luke. Yes, every now and then, Luke commandeers my cell phone and establishes a new ringtone for me. My first was a cute, "Ring-a-ring-a-ring", which then was replaced by a boisterous, "What's CRACKALACKIN!". Then we had "STOP BLOODY SHOUTING AT ME!".

This newest one should turn some heads... I'm not sure I like the direction this is all heading...

The whole joke comes from the following video, which is one of those bring-you-to-tears-funny sketches from the Colbert Report:

More Photos and Video from the Spirit of Washington Dinner

Here's a video from the Loudoun Times-Mirror on the distilling... a decent video, but I don't like myself on screen!

Check out the bar of the big boys, compared to us small fry. We've got a long way to go!

More photos from dinner at Mount Vernon last night. Seven hundred people in attendance last night.

Tour of George Washington's Distillery and Grist Mill

Now, THIS is my kind of history tour!  A tour of the distillery at Mt. Vernon, plus a private demonstration of the grist mill in action!  Very cool day, and some very good peach brandy being made today.

Happy Birthday, Luke!

Luke had a really good day. He started out with a win for his soccer match, his team beating the other team 4-1. This win puts their record to 4-0, a perfect season so far!

After the game, we headed to the pet store to pick up a small aquarium for Luke's new pets-- some Madagascar hissing cockroaches. (Yeah, I know, but they are really low maintenance.)

Later, we headed over to the bowling alley and played three games. (I was two pins shy of a turkey... two pins!)

And after bowling, a dinner at the Kobe Steakhouse. We allowed Luke to get the filet mignon, and he polished it off handily.

After dinner, we picked up a birthday cookie.

Last thing I heard him say... "I'm so happy!"  Awesome day!!

Luke's Birthday Presents

We opened Luke's birthday presents a night early, and let me tell you, I'm glad we did!! It is only because we did that we will now have a Vuvuzela at Luke's soccer match tomorrow! Dear God, help us all! (And thankyouverymuch, Chuck, for your... thoughtfulness!)

Actually, of all the gifts Luke got, including a Droid tablet, some cool Linkin Park and Eminem CDs, some great Wii games, a new bike, pet Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and some awesome shirts and jerseys, despite all of these things, it was the damn Vuvuzela that he blew on for the rest of the damn night!

Yes, THIS is exactly how I feel.....
